Does Hyena support Windows 2000/2003 ?

Hyena includes extensive support for management of Active Directory under both Windows 2000 and Windows 2003 Server.  Hyena can also be used to manage Active Directory from any Windows 2000 or Windows XP client.

Year 2000 (Y2K) Compliance

We guarantee that Hyena is compatible with the storage, entry, manipulation, and processing of dates and times that refer to the 21st century, as long as the underlying operating system also supports these dates and times.  In the case of Windows NT 3.51 and 4.0, for example, there is an operating system imposed limit to the year 2036.  The limit of the year 2036 is a documented restriction of Windows NT/2000.

Hyena uses only standard, documented, Win32, C++ (MFC), and C runtime library functions for all date and time manipulation.  The primary routines and classes that are used are GetDateFormat and CTime's methods.  Hyena's primary use of date information is in the display of file dates, and user account expiration dates.

Unable to get the list of printers from a NT 4.0 print server

There is a reported limitation of listing the printers from a NT 4.0 print server from a NT 3.51 workstation or server. A workaround is to either run the Exporter utility from a NT 4.0 client, or directly on the server itself.  This problem appears to be due to an incompatibility between NT 3.51 and NT 4.0.

We are also aware of a problem with Samba servers, which do not offer up the same information as found on NT servers.  However, we are unable to find anyone with any information on how/what information is available from a Samba server.  If you know of a way to get this information, we'd love to hear from you !

I get an error when I run Hyena under Windows 95/98.  Why ?

Unfortunately, Hyena will not execute on Windows 95/98, due to the many differences between the two operating systems. Hyena needs to be executed on a client workstation or server running either Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0.  Due to the many new features both in the NT 4.0 GUI and core operating system, Hyena does support more functions and features on NT 4.0 than under NT 3.51.

I get a runtime error 3170 when trying to use Access Reporting.

We believe this is caused by a missing component in Microsoft Access. You can read more about it from this page on Microsoft's site: http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q171/9/55.asp.

I ran Hyena's setup program but at the very end I get an empty error message box.

You must be logged into the server or workstation that you are installing Hyena on with an account that has administrative privileges. If you don't have the appropriate privileges, Hyena's setup will fail at the very end and display a blank error box.

Setup runs very slowly or not at all.

Please close Microsoft Outlook before starting Hyena's setup program. It is recommended that all programs be closed prior to running setup, but it is a known problem that when Microsoft Outlook is left running, setup will be extremely slow, or not run at all.

I ran Hyena's setup program, but nothing was installed.

You are trying to install Hyena on Windows 95/98. Unfortunately, Hyena will not execute on Windows 95/98, due to the many differences between the two operating systems. Hyena needs to be executed on a client workstation or server running either Windows NT 3.51 or 4.0, Windows XP, or Windows 200x.

What about support for Citrix or Terminal Server users ?

We have now added this functionality to our Enterprise Edition of Hyena. Make sure to read the help file for information on how to configure your machine for Terminal Server support.

I'm getting an error about a .DLL either after installing Hyena or another application.

Hyena requires updated versions of certain DLL files. If you receive an error trying to run Hyena that references a problem with a DLL file, do the following:

  • If you have not rebooted after installation, go ahead and reboot now. Then try running Hyena again.
  • See if you have any DLLs named mfc42.dll, msvcrt.dll or ctl3d32.dll in the Hyena installation directory, usually in C:\program files\Hyena. If you find either of these files there, delete them.
  • If the files mfc42u.dll and msvcrt.dll in your system32 directory do NOT have these versions, make sure that the current ones are NOT marked read-only. Then, reinstall Hyena again, and reboot after installing.  If after rebooting, you still don't have these versions, contact us at support@systemtools.com.
  • If these files DO have the correct version, then scan your local drives for any duplicates of these files, and if you find them, either rename or delete them.

Can I order Hyena with a company purchase order ?

To order Hyena with a company purchase order, simply instruct your purchasing department to fax the purchase order to (830) 779-2191.  If you want the registration key emailed to you right away, list your email address on the purchase order.  Most orders are processed the same or next business day.  Payment terms are Net 30.

How does Hyena's licensing work ?

Hyena only needs to be licensed for the number of users actually using the software, which typically includes only IT management, system administration, and help desk staff.   It does not matter how many actual domains, servers, or workstations (users) your organization has.  We have various multi-user license packs available.  Our prices are the most cost-effective of any NT/XP/200x system management utility.

Security

Viewing security for all shares on a server

To view all of the security settings for all of the shares on a server at the same time, right click on a server's Shares object in the tree window, and then select View all Access Rights from the menu. By combining this
function with the Copy... option from the Edit menu, a quick listing of all shares and their access rights can be generated.

Viewing security for all files / directories

To view all file security permissions, and optionally owner information, first select one or more files and/or directories in either the tree or list view windows.   Then, right click and select the View Security... option; options include viewing security information for only the selected objects, or to show all objects in the selected directories and/or subdirectories.

Ease of Use Tips

Moving quickly around the tree view window

The escape key can be used to quickly move up to the parent object of any currently selected object.  You can also press any alphanumeric key on the keyboard to quickly jump to the first item that matches the keys pressed.  For example, when viewing a list of users, pressing "jo" will automatically scroll the window and select the first user named "Johnson".

Moving quickly around the list view window

You can press any alphanumeric key on the keyboard while in the rightmost list window to quickly jump to the first item that matches the keys pressed.  For example, when viewing a list of users, pressing "jo" will automatically scroll the window and select the first user named "Johnson".

Using the Quick Access object

Hyena's tree window includes an object named "Quick Access".  This container object is used for holding computers and printers that need to be made quickly accessible, or that are not available on the network.  Right click on the Quick Access label and select Manage Quick Access from the menu to add computers and/or printers.  Then, you will be able to access the computers and printers' objects and object properties without having to search for them in their normal locations.

Viewing printer states

When displaying the printers under the Printers object for a server or workstation, Hyena uses a different icon to represent printers in three (3) different states, as follows:

printer busy Printer is online and currently printing a document
printer offline Printer is online and currently idle
printer offline Printer is offline or out of paper

Refreshing the list window

The list window can be manually refreshed by pressing the F5 key.

Copying information to the clipboard or a file

In addition to the built-in exporting capabilities in Hyena, any information presented in the right list window can be copied to the clipboard. This allows any information displayable by Hyena (services, share security information, etc.) to be easily copied to other programs. Once any information is displayed in the list window, simply select the desired records either using the mouse/keyboard, or choosing the Select All option on the Edit menu. Then, simply select the Copy... function on the Edit menu. You can then choose whether to copy the information to the clipboard or to a text file.  Options are also present for selecting the field delimiter character and whether column names should be copied.

Shares

Changing the path to an existing share

To change the path to a share, simply modify the share's path in the Share Properties dialog.  When you close the dialog, Hyena will ask for confirmation to stop sharing the old directory and re-share the resource with a new directory path.

Automatically creating a directory when adding a new share

To add a new share and directory at the same time, simply right click on the Shares object for any server or workstation, and select "Create New Share..." from the menu.  Enter in the local path for the directory to share on the remote server/workstation.  When you close the dialog, Hyena will automatically ask you to confirm that you want to create the directory.

Groups

Renaming / Copying groups

NT does not include a facility to rename groups, however, Hyena allows copying both global and local groups.  After copying a group, the two groups will be identical (except for the SIDs).  To copy a group, right click on a group name and select Copy Group... from the menu. Note: While copied groups will be identical, their SIDs will be different.   Therefore, exercise care when deleting the original group if it was used to assign security permissions on shares or files systems.

Performance

Speeding up file browsing

To speed up browsing for files and shares, turn off the file-related options listed under the "Performance" heading on the View dialog of Hyena's settings.  To access this dialog, select Tools->Settings from the main menu.

Speeding up opening a domain

By default, Hyena will show the names of the Primary Domain Controller (PDC), Backup Domain Controller(s), and NT Server(s) under the domain name in the tree window.  In some networks, getting the list of BDCs and Servers can take time.  Hyena v1.75 introduced a new configuration option to not list the BDCs and Servers under the domain, thereby speeding up the action of opening the domain in the tree window.  The BDCs and Servers can still be accessed in the Computers, Networks, and Quick Access objects.  To enable/disable this feature, select Tools->Settings from the menu and check or uncheck the Always show BDCs and Servers under domain object option in the View dialog.

Integration with other programs

Hyena supports integration with external programs and other utilities through the Tools dialog.  To define custom tools, select Tools->Settings from Hyena's menu.  Then, access the Tools dialog tab.  Items added using this dialog will be added to Hyena's Tools menu, and can also be invoked with Control-F1 (for the first tool) through Control-F9 (for the 9th tool defined).   To access User Manager for Domains, for example, simply enter in the path to UsrMgr.exe for the command line (for example \\pdc\admin$\system32\usrmgr.exe).  Two special variables can be entered into the command line that will be replaced during execution with their respective values.  These special variables are:

%E% - will be replaced with the active Entry (selected item)
%S% - will be replaced with the active Server whose objects are being viewed

How to integrate ping and tracert

If your network uses tcp/ip, integration of the ping and tracert commands directly into Hyena can provide an easy and fast way to check network connections.  To do this, first define a custom tool command line to run a batch file, passing the current active entry to the batch file.  For example, configure the command line as:

c:\tools\pinger.bat %E%

Then, create the batch file (pinger.bat) with the following commands (as an example):

@echo off
ping %1
echo ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
tracert %1
pause

To run this batch file on any selected server, simply select your custom tool option from the Tools menu, or use the applicable Control-Fx hot key (Control F1 for the first custom tool, etc.)

As an alternative, you can also create a single command to do all of this, thereby eliminating the need for a batch file.  To do this, enter this for the command line:

cmd.exe /x /c ping %E% & tracert %E% & pause

Integration with Performance Monitor

To create a mechanism to invoke Performance Monitor easily for any selected server or workstation, enter the following for the Command Line of a custom tool:

Perfmon.exe -c \\%E%

Additional command line parameters for Performance Monitor allow pre-configured charts and settings to be automatically invoked. See the online documentation for Performance Monitor on how to save pre-configured chart settings.
