.SystemTools Commander

As previously announced, we've released SystemTools Commander (SysCmd). SysCmd is an interactive bulk import and update utility. Features include:

  • Creating new Active Directory objects
  • Modifying any Active Directory attribute
  • User and group membership modification
  • Computer and local user/group bulk management
  • System shutdown and rebooting
  • Updating the computer browser comment

The Active Directory capabilities of SysCmd support a number of advanced features, including adding and removing portions of multi-valued attributes, updating Terminal Server attributes, and even importing user photo files.

SysCmd takes its input from delimited text files, providing for an extremely flexible method of providing information from external sources. For example, if your HR system has employee information, such as employee ID and phone numbers, it can easily be placed into an external file and be quickly merged into Active Directory.

Unlike our other products, SysCmd's trial is not time-limited, but rather is limited only by the number of entries being processed from the input file. This provides for an unlimited evaluation period that is also fully functional.

Hyena v8.8 rev 'F'

Hyena v8.8 has been updated to rev 'F'. This update includes all the latest fixes since the original release plus a few minor features.

If you missed the v8.8 release announcement, the primary new feature in Hyena v8.8 is support for the new Windows 2.0 Task Scheduler used by Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008. Options include viewing all scheduled tasks on one or more computers, viewing tasks by folder location, showing running tasks, task termination and more.

Changes in rev 'F' include:

  • Fixed problem with Hyena crashing at startup due to large registry key in HKCR on Windows 7/8 computers.
  • Fixed problem with double entries on the Computer Properties > Software dialog when used on an x86 system to view a remote x64 system's software.
  • Fixed problem with Hyena crashing when viewing the local groups on a Windows 8 computer.
  • Added the SID and SamAccountName attributes to the Active Directory Recycle Bin (View Deleted Objects) display.
  • Added the Local Users and Local Groups to Linux/Samba server tree nodes
  • Added option to include %domain% and %name% in the file name when running the Group Policy Report option

Hyena v9.0 BETA

The beta version of Hyena v9.0 is now available. While there will be a number of interesting features in this release, the main new feature is support for the EVTX (Crimson) event log format. More work is still ongoing, but to get notified of beta updates, join our beta list by sending an email to hyenabeta@systools.com.

New Help Resources

SystemTools has always taken product support very seriously. Next to providing industry-leading software features, support and customer service are one of our main priorities. Some changes we've recently implemented:

Updated FAQs for Support and Sales - We've updated our FAQs for support and sales, and created a new main support page on our site. To read the new FAQs, visit:

New Support Ticket System - We've also opened our internal support system to the public, so that customers can open their own support tickets if they choose to. This is especially useful for our many non-US customers and for after-hours support. Our support ticket system is available on our main support page:

.Tips

Viewing All Active Directory Attributes

One of the primary troubleshooting techniques that we use when supporting customers with Active Directory query questions is the 'View all Directory Attributers" feature in Hyena. To access it, just right click on any single directory object (either window), then select Query Active Directory > View all Directory Attributes. Why is this useful ?

  • If you don't know the name of an attribute that you want to add to a general directory query, simply sort on the Property Name column to find it. Or, if you know what the directory data should be, sort on the Value column.
  • Directory attributes that are not visible with standard GUI dialogs can always be found this way.
  • More recent versions of Hyena support simply double-clicking on any directory attribute to modify its contents. Much better than ADSIEDIT.

Getting Hyena to Use the 'New' Group Policy Editor

Hyena v9.0 will feature automatic detection of which group policy editor is available, and use the newer gpme.msc if it is found. For users of older versions of Hyena, you can manually specify which group policy editor to run by using the GpoEditCmd advanced setting under Tools > Settings > Advanced.

By default, Hyena will run gpedit.msc, but if you system has the gpme.msc policy editor, the following command can be entered for the GpoEditCmd setting:

mmc gpme.msc /gpobject:"%s"

The GPME editor will give you access to the newer 'Preferences' in the group policy.

Where do you find group policies in Hyena ? Navigate through the Containers/OUs structure of your domain, expand the 'System' container, then expand the 'Policies' container, or double click it to list all of the policies in the right window.

Hyena v8.8 'F' has a new feature (see above) that a will allow multiple policies to be selected in Hyena's right window, then by using the new %domain% and %name% symbols in the filename, generate reports for all of your group policies at once.

.Hyena Maintenance

All Hyena licenses have a built-in maintenance expiration date, which can be displayed under the Tools > Settings > Licensing dialog. The maintenance expiration date determines whether new releases can be installed with the active license. If your maintenance has recently expired or about to expire, it can be renewed now. For maintenance information and renewal options, visit:

http://www.systemtools.com/hyena/maint_main.htm

If you prefer to get an email quotation on maintenance renewal, send your current license information to sales@systemtools.com and request a maintenance renewal quote. You can easily get the current license information under Hyena's Tools > Settings > Licensing dialog.

If your maintenance expiration date is before November 15, 2011, the upgrade cost is only 50% of the licensing cost, which includes one year of maintenance.
Maintenance expirations on or after November 15, 2011 can be renewed now.
